stop talking about the royal baby and start talking about how today information was released by scientists to the press that dolphins actually communicate to one-another by name. dolphins have names for eachother this is way cooler than a rich baby

(source, and agreed wholeheartedly)

w-wasn’t this like, proved in the 70’s?

I was thinking the same as well, so I just read the entire article. Very briefly, they knew each dolphin had their own type of whistling in a great part of their communication (they call it “signature whistle”), so dolphins can easily identify each other. And yep, they have cited a bunch of articles about individual calls.

What they tried to prove, is that some “signature whistles” could be used to address another individual (which apparently wasn’t proven before). The methods are pretty much confusing, but then in the results, when they produced a “signature whistle” to the owner, it would respond the same way, and some familiar individuals would reply with the same whistle.

Then statistics statistics, and yeah, it’s statistically significant. They didn’t found out that a dolphin said “Hey Joe, come see this dumbasses recording us”, but that it’s pretty much possible that it happens.

It’s all a matter of having the statistics to back you up.

But yey communication!!

(Pssst, since I have VPN from the university, I have full access to the article, so if you want it, I can e-mail it to you)

So, I’ll be leaving for Berlin in about two weeks and I still haven’t found a place yet.

I’ll be staying in Berlin during the 29th June till 29th August, and I need to rent a room. I would really appreciate if anyone could reblog or give me an offer, in case you have a room in Berlin to rent/sublet during that period. (You’re free to contact me to claraferreira6[at]gmail.com

Not scientific illustration-wise, but still art! Having fun with dead cows and new brushes, thanks to GIMP Paint Studio.

I have a pad full of studies like these. This is what precedes an illustration, be it scientific or just for fun.

Ah! I forgot to put a white paper behind the scan, so you can actually see more sketches behind.
